Modern Devices Come with Modern Problems

Did you know that Canadians spend approximately 11 hours a day in front of a screen? Whether a computer, smartphone, tablet, or TV, our lives revolve around technology. But with these modern machines come modern problems.

Those who spend even 2 hours or more looking at a screen can develop eye discomfort called digital eye strain. Symptoms include:

  • Sore, tired, burning, or itching eyes
  • Watery or dry eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Headaches
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Sore neck, shoulders, or back
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty keeping your eyes open

What Causes Digital Eye Strain

Despite its name and association with digital devices, digital eye strain is not actually caused by the screens and devices themselves. Instead, it is caused by extended periods of intense focus on one area. While reading without resting and driving long distances can cause eye strain, digital device use is the most common cause.

Screen use causes strain on the eyes more than other mediums because:

  • We tend to blink less while using computers, contributing to dry eyes and discomfort.
  • Use devices at less than ideal angles, causing neck, back, and shoulder pain.
  • Use devices with glare or reflection.
  • Use devices with poor contrast and brightness.

Uncorrected vision errors, like myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, can also make your eyes work harder while using digital devices, increasing digital eye strain symptoms.

Reduce the Risk of Eye Strain

You can reduce your risk of developing eye strain by making a few adjustments to your daily habits. One of the easiest ways to do this is to give yourself a break from your work, whether it is on a computer or behind the wheel. Breaks are not only good for your eyes but your overall health as well.

One way to ensure you are giving your eyes appropriate rest from screen time is by following the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This rest will give your eye muscles a chance to relax.

If you spend a lot of time working on a computer or at a desk, consider adopting proper office ergonomics. Ergonomics are designed to help you feel as comfortable as possible and reduce the stress placed on your body through repeated or extended motions.

Set your workspace up properly so you can feel your best throughout the day:

  • Place your monitor at arm’s length away.
  • Position your wrists straight and your hands at or below elbow level.
  • Adjust your chair height so your knees are level with your hips.
  • Choose a comfortable chair with plenty of support.
  • Reduce glare by facing your screen away from bright lights and windows.
  • Set your screen’s colour contrast and brightness to match your environment.

Come See Us
for an Eye Exam

If making the necessary adjustments is not helping ease your discomfort, please call us and book an eye exam.

Although digital eye strain does not lead to long-term complications, the symptoms are similar to more serious vision problems. A comprehensive eye exam will allow us to rule out anything potentially dangerous.
